Can Stretching Release Trauma? What Pelvic Floor Therapy Actually Says About the Mind-Body Connection

If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the videos.

Someone settles into a deep hip stretch such as pigeon pose, a lunge, or a long-held hip opener ….. and suddenly they’re crying.

The caption says something like:

“Your hips store trauma.”

“I released years of emotions from my body.”

“My body was finally letting go of what I was holding onto.”

And if you’ve ever felt an emotional shift during movement, stretching, massage, breathwork, or exercise, you may have wondered:

Is this actually happening?

Can stretching really release trauma?

The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

And this is where understanding the mind-body connection becomes incredibly important.

Because while your hips are not literally a storage container holding years of emotional experiences, your body absolutely responds to stress, emotions, and life experiences in very real ways.

And your pelvic floor is a perfect example.

Your body and nervous system are constantly communicating

Your body is not just a collection of separate parts working independently.

Your muscles, your brain, your hormones, your nervous system, and your emotions are all connected.

Think about what happens when you’re stressed.

You might notice:

  • Your shoulders creep up toward your ears

  • Your jaw clenches

  • Your breathing becomes shallow

  • Your muscles feel tighter

  • You have a harder time relaxing

You don’t consciously decide to tense these areas.

Your nervous system responds automatically.

Your pelvic floor can respond the same way.

For some people, stress and a heightened nervous system state can contribute to increased pelvic floor tension, difficulty relaxing, pelvic pain, painful intimacy, bladder urgency, or feeling like their body is constantly “holding on.”

This doesn’t mean your pelvic floor is broken.

It means your body is responding.

So why do people feel emotions during stretching?

The experience is real.

The explanation just needs more nuance.

When you slow down, breathe deeply, move with intention, and spend time noticing your body, you create an opportunity to shift your nervous system into a more regulated state.

That can bring up emotions.

It can create a feeling of release.

It can help you reconnect with your body.

And for many people, especially those who have experienced pregnancy, birth, injury, chronic stress, pain, or difficult life experiences, simply feeling safe and connected in their body again can be incredibly powerful.

But the release isn’t necessarily because your hip muscles were physically holding a specific traumatic memory.

It’s because your body and brain are always communicating.

The problem with the “just stretch your hips” advice

Here is where we need to be careful.

Because the internet loves simple answers.

“Your hips are tight? Stretch them.”

“Your pelvic floor hurts? Strengthen it.”

“Your stress is high? Just release the trauma.”

But the human body is not that simple.

If stretching alone solved chronic pain, pelvic floor dysfunction, or stress-related symptoms, everyone would feel better after a few yoga classes.

Sometimes the answer is mobility.

Sometimes it’s strength.

Sometimes it’s learning how to coordinate your muscles differently.

Sometimes it’s addressing your breathing patterns, your nervous system, your movement habits, your hormones, your sleep, or the stress your body has been carrying.

The goal is not to force your body to release.

The goal is to understand what your body needs and this is individual to each person.

That’s why at Revitalize, we look at the whole person to connect the dots for you. This allows us to find the contributing factors to help you address the areas of need in the right order!

This is why pelvic floor therapy is about more than the pelvic floor

At Revitalize Physical Therapy, we believe your symptoms rarely exist in isolation.

Your pelvic floor is connected to:

  • Your core

  • Your breathing mechanics

  • Your nervous system

  • Your musculoskeletal system

  • Your hormones

  • Your overall health and wellness

This is why we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.

A woman experiencing pelvic pain may not need more stretching.

A woman struggling with leaking may not simply need more strengthening.

A woman feeling disconnected from her body may not need to “push harder.”

She needs someone to understand the whole picture.

The mind-body connection is real. Your body is not your enemy.

One of the most important things we can learn is that our bodies are always trying to communicate with us.

Pain, tension, fatigue, and discomfort are not signs that your body has failed you.

They are information.

The answer is not always to ignore your symptoms. It’s also not always to chase the newest wellness trend. It’s learning to listen.

Your body has adapted, protected you, carried you through experiences, and helped you get where you are today.

The goal isn’t to fight your body.

The goal is to work with it.

And that is where true healing begins.

You don’t have to figure it out alone

If you’ve been struggling with pelvic pain, leaking, tension, discomfort, or simply feeling like your body isn’t working the way it used to, we want you to know this:

You are not alone and you are not out of options.

Maybe you’ve tried stretching. Maybe you’ve tried strengthening. Maybe you’ve tried doing everything “right” but still don’t feel like yourself.

That’s exactly why we take a different approach.

At Revitalize Physical Therapy, we look beyond the symptoms and help you understand the why behind what your body is experiencing. Because lasting change starts with understanding your body as a whole, not just chasing the problem area.

If you have questions, are unsure where to start, or feel like you’ve tried everything without getting answers, we’re here for you.
